Manchester United missed out on signing 23-yr-old star after he failed medical twice
Goalkeeper Toby Savin’s dream move to Manchester United fell through twice this year, according to reports.
With Nathan Bishop signing permanently with Sunderland, Manchester United began 2024 in pursuit of a new third-choice goalkeeper for the latter half of the season.
Andre Onana had already arrived from Inter to become the new number 1 at Old Trafford last summer, while Altay Bayindir followed in from Fenerbahce to take up the deputy role.
In the middle of the season, the Red Devils identified the need to get some extra cover between the sticks. And to fulfil their requirements, they narrowed down Accrington Stanley goalkeeper Toby Savin as the right man for the job.
The 23-year-old had also attracted interest from Newcastle and Spurs, but the player was set on signing for Manchester United, only for the transfer to eventually fall through!
Shoulder injury the roadblock in Savin’s Manchester United dream
According to The Sun, Manchester United had everything sorted with Accrington Stanley to sign Toby Savin back in January. However, the transfer ended up collapsing after Savin failed his medical examination ahead of the switch.
The Englishman had been suffering from a shoulder injury, which also restricted his game-time during the 2023/24 campaign.
In fact, the same injury is said to have prevented him from moving to the Theatre of Dreams for a second time this summer—on a free transfer this time. Savin was unable to pass the necessary medical tests last month, which ended up leaving him in limbo.

But by June end, Shrewsbury Town from League One came to his rescue, signing Savin on a two-year contract. Given his talents and the constant United link, a major move to Manchester may well materialise in the future.
The Mancunians, meanwhile, have signed Tom Heaton on a one-year extension to temporarily fill the gap. The 38-year-old, who spent the summer in a coaching role with England at EURO 2024, is in his second spell at Old Trafford. However, he has managed to make just one official appearance since returning in 2021.
