Manchester United have tied down youth academy prospect Samuel Mather to a new long-term contract, according to reports.

The Red Devils’ youth academy is on a roll, pumping out players that are not only capable of featuring in the club’s senior team, but also putting in world-class performances on the international stage.

Argentinian winger Alejandro Garnacho and English midfielder Kobbie Mainoo are two prime examples of such starlets that have emerged in the previous seasons.

And it appears the trend might continue this year as well, with the likes of Toby Collyer, Harry Amass and Habeeb Ogunneye greatly impressing during United’s ongoing pre-season friendlies.

Manchester United secure future of another up-and-coming talent

While the Old Trafford outfit is promoting near-ready youngsters to the first-team, it is also retaining talents that could break out in the near future by convincing them to pen down new deals.

One such example is Samuel Mather. As per journalist Fabrizio Romano, the promising left-winger has signed a new three-year deal with the Mancunian giants until June 2027, with an option to extend for a further season.

The wide-man has impressed at multiple youth levels at Manchester United. He bagged seven goals and 14 assists for the U18s before transitioning to the U21s, where he notched six goals and one assist in just 848 minutes.

Last season, Mather headed out to Rochdale in the National League, where he made his senior football debut and scored twice in 529 minutes across 10 appearances.

This move was part of a flexi-loan arrangement, a system introduced by United last season to allow youngsters to gain senior experience while staying integrated with the daily routines at Carrington.

Interestingly, Mather was part of the successful 2021/22 FA Youth Cup team that also featured Garnacho and Mainoo. And now that he has committed his future to Manchester United, it will be interesting to see whether he follows his batchmates’ footsteps and makes it to the senior squad as well.
