Left-back expected to replace Luke Shaw at Manchester United is now without a club

Brandon Williams remains without a club — three months after being released by his boyhood club Manchester United.

The English left-back made his debut under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2019 and quickly won over his manager as well as the Old Trafford crowd with his versatility and fearless style of play.

Just two months after his debut, the club officials were so impressed with his performances that the then CEO Ed Woodward made a massive claim regarding his future at the club.

According to The Athletic, Woodward “was so impressed he told people on a Europa League trip to Astana in Kazakhstan that Williams had replaced Luke Shaw” as the club’s top left-back.

It was certainly a bold and over-enthusiastic view about the player who had been playing at left-back for United’s under-21s because he supposedly struggled to play on the opposite flank ahead of Ethan Laird.

This time his competition was Shaw, who despite his injury woes, was and still is considered one of the best left-backs in Europe.

Where is former Manchester United youngster Brandon Williams now?

Brandon Williams’ much-adored aggressive style couldn’t compete with Shaw’s technical prowess and he eventually found himself on the fringes of the first team.

In 2021 he joined Norwich City on loan before dropping down a division to gain minutes at Ipswich Town in 2023.

The 24-year-old failed to impress at either Norwich or Ipswich, leading to United eventually deciding to not hand him a new contract.

On June 30 of this year, Williams permanently exited United, having joined the side at the age of seven.

Unfortunately, the full-back has not managed to find another club so far and chances of returning to top-level football imminently are bleak as he is scheduled to go on trial in March of 2025 for dangerous driving, a charge he denies.
