Italian giants plotting surprise move for Manchester United star Lisandro Martinez

Napoli are interested in signing Lisandro Martinez from Manchester United, as per reports.

Once a fan favourite at Old Trafford, Martinez has become sort of a forgotten name at United after spending a lengthy period on the sidelines.

The Argentina centre-back joined United from Ajax in a deal worth around £57 million. He instantly established himself as a crucial part of Erik ten Hag’s squad, impressing with his intensity out of possession and composure with the ball at his feet.

However, the 27-year-old has struggled with serious injury issues over the last two years. He suffered a metatarsal fracture in April 2023 followed by a foot injury in September of the same year.

When will Lisandro Martinez return for Manchester United?

The biggest setback came in February of this year when he suffered a serious knee injury. Martinez had to undergo surgery on his torn anterior cruciate ligament, with the defender potentially sidelined for up to a year. He is unlikely to return to full fitness in 2025 and fans might have to wait until early 2026 to see him in action for Manchester United.

United have since relied on the likes of Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven and the young pair have done well to fill Martinez’s void. Amid this, the Argentine has attracted interest from Napoli.

Napoli keen on Manchester United star Lisandro Martinez

According to Corriere dello Sport‘s Campania newspaper (via Sport Witness), Lisandro Martinez is on Napoli’s shortlist this summer.

It is claimed the centre-back is “followed” and “liked” by the Serie A champions, who are understood to be not too concerned about his fitness issues. Sporting director Giovanni Manna is reported to be his admirer.

La Repubblica (via CN24) also suggest the United defender is being monitored by Napoli.

Antonio Conte has hugely benefited from the signing of Scott McTominay, who has been named the Italian league’s MVP on the back of a prolific campaign.

As such, Napoli could be tempted to take a chance on another troubled United star. However, it remains unclear if United will entertain any offers for Martinez.
