Manchester United plotting move for Southampton midfielder
Manchester United are in the market for a new midfielder for Ruben Amorim.
Having strengthened their attack, United are now exploring the possibility of adding a new midfielder to their ranks. Their current options lack both technical and physical prowess.
United’s priority target is the athletic Carlos Baleba. However, Brighton are reluctant to part ways with the Cameroonian, and it might take a British record fee for the Red Devils to bring the Seagulls to the negotiating table.
Amid this, United have shown interest in a Championship midfielder.
Manchester United interested in Southampton star
According to Talksport, Manchester United admire Mateus Fernandes.
Currently at Southampton, the Portuguese midfielder made his senior breakthrough under Ruben Amorim at Sporting Lisbon.
The 21-year-old is impressive at covering ground with real intensity and dominating ground duels. He is capable of playing all across the midfield, and comfortable with the ball his feet in tight areas.
However, the Red Devils will need to act fast if they want to reunite Fernandes with Amorim, who is keen to sign a defensive minded midfielder ahead of the new season.

West Ham United are pushing to sign the Championship midfielder, having opened talks with Southampton over a summer deal. It is understood that Saints are likely to demand in excess of £30m for the ex-Sporting gem.
While Baleba is certainly a more solid option, Fernandes’ price tag makes him an appealing option for United, especially if they decide to sign a new goalkeeper as well amid concerns over Andre Onana’s ability.
