What is behind Roma’s failure to sign Jadon Sancho from Manchester United?
Italian giants Roma have been trying to sign Jadon Sancho for weeks now.
As per Corriere dello Sport last week, there was an agreement between the Giallorossi and Manchester United for a fee of €18 million plus bonuses.
The player had shown an inclination towards the move, but there was no final decision as the press in Italy revealed that the the Englishman’s agents had made some major demands over commissions that were dragging the move along.
Alfredo Pedulla reported more insights about the situation this week and it seems key to why Sancho is still at Manchester United.
The journalist claims that the 25-year-old is a ‘prisoner’ of his agent, who had been playing tricks to not just earn from Sancho’s transfer but also get money from Tyrique George’s move to Roma from Chelsea.
Roma’s agreement with Manchester United meant that they would not pay a high amount of commission to Sancho’s agent, having already committed a major fee to the English side.
As a result, they were offered a chance to sign George for a cheaper fee as the agent would earn a higher commission from that move, knowing that he would now earn a major part of the entire package.
As a result of this mess, Roma moved on from the player altogether as Sancho’s agent has been dallying, amidst interest from Besiktas and in the hope that the Turkish club can meet his commission demands.
The playmaker remains out of the project at Old Trafford and with transfer deadline day approaching in some days, he would still have to find a new destination.
Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini has made it clear that the club will not ‘beg’ for any player to join them and if Sancho isn’t keen on arriving at the Stadio Olimpico, he can stay where he is.
This is perhaps quite a major to suggest that Roma will not take the situation for granted and are not scared of pulling away and focusing on other targets.
Manchester United, in the meantime, need sales to make some key late signings in the summer transfer window, as they have failed to win a single game in three outings in all competitions.
