How Cavani’s Conversation With Fernandes Led To His Freekick vs Liverpool

Bruno Fernandes emerged as Manchester United’s saviour yet again against Liverpool, but it was Edinson Cavani who was the silent hero of the game.

United hosted their bitter rivals on Sunday for their FA Cup 4th round tie. Despite taking the lead early, the Reds succumbed to the hosts conceding goals from Mason Greenwood, Marcus Rashford, and Bruno Fernandes. Mohamed Salah’s brace was ultimately not enough to keep his side in the tie.

Meanwhile, the Portuguese midfielder answered his critics very well by scoring the winner via an impressive free-kick. But according to the ex-Sporting Lisbon man, Cavani was the brain behind it.

“I work a lot on these kind of goals,” the Portuguese international revealed [via BBC]. “Free-kicks, I tried, this one was good. Edi [Cavani] before the free-kick told me ‘try a hard one on the side of the keeper’. I tried it and it went in.”

This goes on to show how valuable experience can be in high-pressure games. The Uruguayan’s intuition essentially won the game for the Red Devils, with some added brilliance from the attacking midfielder.

Although the striker did not exactly have an impressive performance, his experience as a veteran played a big role.

Since coming in, the former Paris Saint-Germain man has done well whenever given the chance. Having to play with a relatively young front-three, his presence could make the difference like it did on Sunday.

Even if age may not allow the lethal forward to make a lot of impact when he is on the ball, his knowledge and experience at the top level is still something that can influence things off the ball.
