Manchester United and Real Madrid are optimistic about completing Raphael Varane’s transfer very soon.

The Frenchman previously refused to sign a contract extension at the Bernabeu after the club reportedly refused to level his wages with new signing David Alaba. Disappointed with Real’s verdict, Varane, who’s also looking for a new challenge, has chosen to make a transfer this summer.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils were on the hunt for a partner for Harry Maguire and identified the French international as their target. Talks between the clubs have been ongoing for quite sometime but the negotiating parties were unable to settle on the fee.

However, according to Patrick Berger, the centre-back is finally on the verge of joining United. The SPORT1 journalist had been a reliable source of news during the Jadon Sancho saga.

If Berger was to be believed, the former Lens man has already agreed on personal terms with the Mancunians on a five-year contract. And although there is a gap between the two European giants when it comes to the valuation of the defender, all involved parties are said to be confident the deal will go through soon.

Los Blancos reportedly expect a sum upwards of €50 million, which does not seem to be a figure Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are eager to pay up right away.

Nevertheless, the La Liga side and Old Trafford outfit are expected to find a solution not too far off in the near future.

The 28-year-old would be an excellent addition to Solskjaer’s already impressive roster as he is someone capable of making an instant impact.

Moreover, this also means that Maguire will finally have a reliable partner next to him which was not the case previously due to Eric Bailly’s injury woes and Victor Lindelof’s inconsistency.
