Ralf Rangnick seems to have already outdone his predecessors in only his first game in charge.
The German led Manchester United for the first time on Sunday against Crystal Palace. The rejuvenated side clinched a well-deserved victory as they seek to settle into the new boss’ mould.
Many noted the change of style in the way the Red Devils played. Rangnick’s men pressed with intensity and managed to remain organised at the same time. The former RB Leipzig boss aims to implement his signature gegenpressing approach at Old Trafford and things seem to be working out well so far.
In fact, this new approach has gotten the Mancunians to achieve something that was last done under Ferguson. United won possession in the final third a whopping 12 times against Palace – owing to their tireless pressing.
Ever since the Scotsman’s retirement, the Old Trafford outfit gained the reputation of a team one would take the game to. They had become somewhat timid with their approach.
However, that seems to be something that is beginning to change under the new management. The ex-Lokomotiv Moscow executive is making a positive impact already, and judging by his history he will continue to do so.
Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see which players adapt to the 63-year-old philosophy and who all are going to fail at it. Gegenpressing requires a very specific set of players with a very specific set of skills so it would not be surprising if certain players do not last under him.
Nevertheless, every member of the squad is likely to do everything they can to win the favour of the new head coach.
