Rangnick Annoyed With Van de Beek’s Mistake That Led To Young Boys’ Goal

Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Young Boys in the Champions League.

Mason Greenwood gave the hosts a ninth minute lead with an impressive volley. A much-changed United maintained their dominance after the goal, but failed to extend the lead due to their lack of composure in the final third.

The same lackluster display around their own penalty area allowed Young Boys to get back into the game, as Fabian Rieder picked up a loose pass from Donny van de Beek to curl past Dean Henderson before the break.

With the Red Devils guaranteed the top spot in the group before a ball was kicked, the result at the full-time didn’t matter much. However, Ralf Rangnick wasn’t happy with the passage of play that invited the visitors into United’s defensive third, leading to the equaliser.

“What annoyed me most was the way we played to the pressing first line. So we sent quite a few pressing invitations to them, including the goal we conceded. We had the chance to not only clear the ball but play the ball forward twice but we didn’t. They had the opportunity to score the equaliser,” the 63-year-old reflected to BT Sport.

“I told them that before the game but still they played in that situation a five-metre pass and they were just waiting for the ball. It was more or less a pressing imitation.”

The way Van de Beek conceded the possession was frustrating, especially for the deepest midfielder in the setup.

The Dutchman never managed to disrupt the ‘McFred’ pivot under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and his audition under Rangnick on Wednesday was an underwhelming one to say the least.
