Manchester United crashed out of the Europa League in an embarrassing fashion, giving away all three goals to Sevilla in the second leg of the Europa League quarter-finals.
The domino effect started at Old Trafford when the Red Devils failed to defend a two-goal lead in the last quarter of the game. Careless handling of the ball in both thirds and unfortunate deflections off Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire allowed Sevilla to level the tie 2-2 away from home.
The Premier League giants were still favourites to progress against La Liga’s 13th-placed side. Especially considering the way they played against Barcelona and Real Betis in previous rounds.
United seemed to be in a generous mood at Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium as well. A mix-up between David de Gea and Maguire handed Youssef En-Nesyri an opportunity to put the ball into the back of the net from close range to put Sevilla ahead in the tie.
De Gea’s errors proved costly for Manchester United against Sevilla
The English centre-back demanded the ball off his goalkeeper. However, the Spaniard had a better view of the situation and should’ve taken note of Sevilla’s pressing trap. Three players were close to Maguire, who ultimately lost the ball. The United captain should’ve also scanned his surroundings better.
The second-half performance from United’s No 1 was even worse. For Sevilla’s second goal, De Gea failed to calculate the flight of the ball, which came off Loic Bade’s shoulder and looped over him.
Ten Hag’s men never looked like they were going to come back into the game. But if there was still any hope left in the away section, De Gea ended it by racing out his box and miskicking the ball into En-Nesyri’s path for an easy finish. A nightmare outing for the world’s highest-paid goalkeeper.

One fan tweeted immediately after the full-time whistle: “I have no idea why any Man Utd fan thinks wanting De Gea replaced means hating/disrespecting him. It’s going to raise a big question mark on Ten Hag if De Gea‘s our no.1 next season. Served the club well for years, but we need to move on for the team’s best interest.”
Another added: “… and that’s probably why David de Gea’s career at Manchester United perhaps should be over.”
Third noted: “The thing is, I kid you not, De Gea should’ve been sold 4-5 years ago. That’s not even hyperbole. If I were in charge of the club he’d have been gone yeaarrsss ago.”
In his post-match analysis for BT Sport, Paul Scholes said: “You have to question the goalkeeper. Eventually Ten Hag is going to want to play out of the back. David de Gea is a fantastic goalkeeper but not a fantastic footballer.”
Ahead of the game, Ten Hag lauded his shot-stopper and hailed him as a “complete goalkeeper”. With United currently in talks to extend his stay, it’ll be interesting to see whether the performance from the £375,000-a-week star has any bearing on his future in Manchester.
