Manchester United are struggling to raise funds in their bid to improve Erik ten Hag’s midfield during the summer transfer window.
The Red Devils have already addressed their defence and attack, having signed Lille centre-back Leny Yoro and Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee.
Midfield appears to be their next priority, with the club’s recruitment staff earmarking Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte as the ideal option to shield their backline.
However, United have balked at PSG’s asking price, believed to be north of £50 million, for the Uruguayan. One of the reasons behind their reluctance to spend big on a midfielder is their tight budget, not helped by lack of big sales.
Manchester United wait for Casemiro offer
According to The Telegraph, Manchester United had hoped to sell Casemiro this summer. Their intention was to use his transfer fee for a new defensive midfielder.
However, so far, there have yet to be “any takers” for the Brazilian, who endured a tough 2023/24 season at Old Trafford.
The 32-year-old former Real Madrid star, whose physical decline didn’t go unnoticed in the middle of the park last season, has attracted very limited suitors, and it remains to be seen “if any late Saudi interest in” him develops.

This has also led to United accelerating their efforts to sell Scott McTominay instead. Both Fulham and Galatasaray have expressed their interest in the Scottish midfielder, who is valued at £25m to £30m by his boyhood club.
For now, United have also switched their focus on finding Ugarte’s alternative. Sander Berge, Richard Ríos, and Martín Zubimendi all feature on their shortlist. The possibility of Sofyan Amrabat’s return is also not ruled out.
