Manchester United full-back Matteo Darmian is close to leaving the Old Trafford club, as per reports.

Matteo Darmian joined the Red Devils in the summer of 2015, for a fee of £13 million. He began his United career with a lot of promise, but then lost form due to recurring injuries and frequent positional changes.

Following the sacking of Louis van Gaal and the arrival of Jose Mourinho, the Italy international has found himself down the pecking order, due to Jose’s preference of Antonio Valencia as his first-choice right-back.

And after looking at Mourinho’s team selection for United’s clash against Zorya Luhansk in the Europa League, it has come to light that the Special One prefers Timothy Fosu-Mensah as his back-up right-back over Matteo Darmian.

Moreover, with the likes of Luke Shaw, Daley Blind, and Marcos Rojo battling for the left-back position, it is evident that the only way Darmian will get to start a game is if two or more full-backs pick up injuries or suspensions.

Therefore, the only logical move for the Italian defender would be to leave Manchester United, and secure a move to a club that will guarantee him some first team football.

The 26-year-old was linked with potential transfers to Italy during the summer transfer window, with Inter and Juventus reported as interested parties. However, no move materialized, as Mourinho was still getting to know all his players.

But if the Italian giants come knocking yet again this January, Darmian may very well choose to leave United and make a return to the Serie A.
