Matteo Darmian has reached an agreement with Inter to join the club on loan in January, as per Italian news outlet Gazzetta Dello Sport.

Matteo Darmian joined the Red Devils from Torino in the summer of 2015, for a fee of £13 million. He began his United career with a lot of promise, but then lost form due to recurring injuries and frequent positional changes.

Following the sacking of Louis van Gaal and the arrival of Jose Mourinho, the Italy international has found himself further down the pecking order, due to Jose’s preference of Antonio Valencia, Luke Shaw, Daley Blind, Timothy Fosu-Mensah, and Marcos Rojo for the full-back positions ahead of Darmian.

It has now become quite evident that the only way Darmian will get to start a game under Mourinho is if more than three full-backs pick up injuries or suspensions.

Therefore, a lot of rumours have now come up, linking the 26-year-old with a potential transfer away from the Old Trafford club.

Darmian was linked with Serie A giants Juventus and Inter this summer, but no move materialized. However, Inter’s interest in the defender seems to have remained, and they will reportedly look to sign Matteo once again this coming January.

In fact, according to Gazzetta Dello Sport, Darmian has already reached an agreement in principle to join Inter Milan on loan in January. The loan move will take place for a certain fee as soon as the Winter transfer window opens, and depending on Darmian’s performances, it could be made permanent at the end of the season.

Inter Milan director Piero Ausilio hinted at this aforementioned move in a recent interview. He was asked if the club was close to signing Darmian from United, Lichtsteiner from Juventus, or Criscito from Zenit Saint Petersburg’s, to which he replied:

“More than one I’d say… half. We evaluated some situations that were proposed to us, but then nothing came of them. The January transfer window is always a little odd, because there are only so many players available and we can only consider quality players who really will bring something extra to the team.”
