Premier League giants Arsenal are set to up their pursuit of Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez, as per reports.

Gimenez made his debut in the Uruguayan league back in 2012, at the tender age of 17. The young center-back was so impressive during his time with Danubio, that Atletico Madrid quickly snapped him up a year later, for a fee believed to be in the region of €1 million.

The defender, now 21 years old, remained on the borders of Atletico Madrid’s first team during the 2013-14 season, but soon after, managed to become a crucial member of the La Liga side’s strong backline. The youngster managed to replace Miranda using his sheer capability, and established himself as Diego Godin’s first-choice center-back partner.

However, the Uruguay international is known for his bad temper, which has created problems for Diego Simeone numerous times. His hot head was one of the main reasons why he was replaced by Stefan Savic in last season’s UEFA Champions League final between the two Madrid giants, and Savic has since managed to retain his place in the starting lineup.

Gimenez is now believed to be out of favour at the Vicente Calderón, but he still remains one of the best young defenders in all of Europe.

Several clubs have been alerted by his situation, and as per the trusted Don Balon, Arsenal are believed to be interested in signing him up this coming January. Arsene Wenger will look to sign the Uruguayan as a long-term solution to his team’s defensive problems.

Along with the Gunners, their Premier League rivals Manchester United are also rumoured to be keeping tabs on the Atletico Madrid man.

The Red Devils are currently going through a defensive crisis, with their first-choice center-half pairing Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling out injured. Jose Mourinho will therefore, try to secure the services of Gimenez as soon as the Winter transfer window opens, so as to stabilise his back line.
