PSG 1-1 Monaco: Match Report

French heavyweights Paris Saint Germain and Monaco clashed on Sunday night, but the game ended in a 1-1 draw thanks to late goals from both sides.

Monaco arrived at the Parc des Princes with a 3-point lead over the home team, and Unai Emery’s men were well aware of the tough task they faced, having failed to beat Monaco at home in the league since February 2007. But their winless streak has now been extended, as the match ended with both sides sharing the spoils.

Edinson Cavani opened the scoring for the Paris-based club in the 81st minute, by converting the penalty PSG received due to Djibril Sidibe’s challenge on new man Julian Draxler inside the box.

However, Monaco fought till the end and eventually got their equalizer in stoppage time, when Alphonse Areola – the substitute goalkeeper who came on for Kevin Trapp after he suffered a hamstring injury – failed to stop a Bernardo Silva shot from 20 yards out.

Thanks to the Portuguese’s late goal, Monaco remain on top in the Ligue 1 standings due to their superior goal difference, whereas the defending French champions lie in the 3rd spot, 3 points behind Monaco and Nice.

Hard luck for the home team on the night, as they dominated the possession for most of the game. The Parisians could have certainly done with a certain Brazilian magician who goes by the name of Ronaldinho, as the former PSG man recently returned to the club and also joined the team in their training sessions.
