Manchester United are keeping a close eye on Napoli attacker Dries Mertens.

United have really struggled for goals this season and Jose Mourinho has made no secret of his desperation to sign another attacker this summer as he publicly criticised his strikers for not getting enough goals.

Recent reports claim that man could be Mertens, who has scored 26 goals along with seven assists across all competitions after being used as a striker by Maurizio Sarri.

The Belgian forward can also operate as a No.10 or play on either side of the midfield, and Gazza Mercato via TMW claim Manchester United scouts watched him against Lazio on Sunday.

Italian media says, even Dries Mertens doesn’t want to sign a new contract with Napoli, fuelling speculation that he’ll leave the San Paolo soon. His current deal runs until 2018.

There is a strong speculation, according to the Gazzetta, that the Belgian will get to the end of next season without signing a new deal. The 29-year-old attacker has already earned interest from China and Inter.

Manchester United have cropped up in the race too, with the Red Devils meeting with Mertens of late. United have reportedly offered the Belgium international a deal worth £4 million per season excluding tax and including bonuses, although the 29-year-old’s decision has not yet been revealed.

Meanwhile, Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis wants a €50 million clause put on the Belgium international, who joined back in 2013 for €9.5m.
