Inter 2-2 AC Milan: Match Report Of Dramatic Milan Derby

Saturday’s Milan Derby came to a stunning conclusion, as AC Milan scored a goal with their last kick of the match to draw the game 2-2 at the Giuseppe Meazza.

Despite having dominated the early stages of the game, AC Milan went a goal down in the 36th minute, as Inter’s Antonio Candreva gave his side the lead with a close-range volleyed finish, thereby becoming the first Inter player to score in two league derbies in the same season since Diego Milito in 2011-12.

Mauro Icardi then doubled the lead just a minute before half-time, by combining beautifully with Ivan Perisic, and the home team went into the dressing with a comfortable 2-0 lead.

Both sides continued to try their luck with respective efforts on goal, but it wasn’t until the 83rd minute when the ball found the back of the net in Milan’s favour, as Suso’s right-footed cross was directed into goal by Alessio Romagnoli.

However, the drama did not stop there, as in the seventh minute of stoppage time, Manuel Locatelli won his side a corner kick, which was volleyed into the goal off the crossbar by Christian Zapata. The video technology confirmed the goal, and the Milan players as well as the fans were sent into raptures as soon as the referee blew the full-time whistle.

Milan boss Vincenzo Montella gave his thoughts on this game in his post-match interview, stating: “I saw 30 minutes of the first half where the team played an excellent game, we could have been more clinical and moved the ball more quickly.

“In the final 15 minutes [of the half] we got a double-whammy of goals. It was improbable for us to lose the match like that. In the second half there was a great reaction, a feat. Coming back from two goals down in the derby is something exceptional.

“In the first game I saw them cheer, this time I celebrated more than I usually do, I now understand the joy the Inter players felt in the first game. This draw is worth something extra in comparison, because there are fewer games left.”

Following the 2-2 draw, Milan now lie 6th in the Serie A table with 58 points, whereas Inter remain 2 points behind their arch-rivals in 7th.
