Sergio Ramos was awarded a straight red card for his two-footed lunge on Lionel Messi in the El Clasico, which the Real Madrid captain has termed “unfair and excessive” in his press conference.

Sergio Ramos is unimpressed with match referee’s decision of giving him a straight red card after a reckless foul on Messi in the 78th minute of the El Clasico.

Barcelona were leading the game by a goal when the red card was produced. Late substitute James Rodriguez managed to draw level for 10-men-Real Madrid, before Messi broke the hearts of Real supporters with a match winning goal in the very last minute.

“The red card was excessive. I was not going to harm anyone. In my opinion, it was a yellow card and not a red. I was too late, but there was no contact. I never have the intention to hurt anyone,” said a frustrated Ramos after the match.

Sergio Ramos also clarified that he was not exchanging words with match referee Hernandez Hernandez, but was rather talking to Gerard Pique.

“I did not applaud the referee when I walked off. I was talking to Pique, not to the referee” he added.

Sergio Ramos then launched an attack on Pique and Barcelona, by saying: “Barcelona have a different understanding of the game and they always talk about referees. But we will not talk about referees, that is not our style.

“Pique always talks about referees. Maybe it is better to talk about the referee sometimes than to keep quiet, but I don’t want to start any controversy.”

It’s easy to understand why Ramos is unhappy with the red card, but looking at the foul – it looks like the decision was just and warranted.

Was it a red card?  Could a yellow card have sufficed? Leave your answers in comments.

Red card for sure because messi was being targeted from the start n sooner or later someone had to get the red card n it was Ramos. His history is not good with barca either, always laying a hand n always trying to dominate the barca players, he had even layed a hand to Puyol who is a gentleman.
