Moyes To Remain As Sunderland Boss, But Defoe Set To Leave

David Moyes is set to remain as Sunderland manager despite the club’s relegation to the Championship. However, star striker Jermain Defoe shall head out the exit door in the summer.
The Black Cats have won just five games in the Premier League this season, and have already been guaranteed relegation, despite having four games left to play.
Defoe has been Sunderland’s only bright spark in a miserable season, and despite his success with the club, he is likely to be on the move in the summer to another Premier League club. The 34-year-old was recalled to the England set-up this season after his fine form prompted Gareth Southgate to include the striker in his plans.
The Englishman is understood to be keen on remaining a part of the national set up, and believes that would only be possible if he continues to show that he can cut it at the highest level.
Speaking about Defoe’s future at Sunderland, David Moyes said: “Jermain has a clause in his contract so it is possible [that he will leave in the summer], but goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is under contract.”

Moyes’s own future has come into question in recent weeks, with his own fans turning on him and the whole saga about comments he made to a female reporter adding to the enormous pressure that was already on his shoulders.
However, he has revealed that after talks with the clubs owners, he is set to remain at the Stadium of Light next season, and believes he knows precisely what’s required to get the club back into the Premier League.
He added: “I know what needs to be done to get back in the Premier League. We had initial discussions about how we move forward. I wouldn’t say it was an uplifting kind of meeting, but we will meet again in a few weeks. Ellis and the board want me to stay.
“We need to make sure we get a good bit of momentum heading into next season by winning a few games. Our performances have been good in recent weeks but the results haven’t matched that.
“I will know more come the end of the season, once we see exactly what we are able to deal with, what we can work with, then we will know exactly what we can do.”
