Mourinho Defends Ander Herrera From Gary Neville’s Criticism
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has come to the defence of Ander Herrera, who was recently criticised by club legend and current football pundit Gary Neville.
The Red Devils’ legendary full-back was critical of Ander Herrera, as the midfielder was mainly at fault for conceding Granit Xhaka’s opening goal during United crucial Premier League encounter against Arsenal at the Emirates.
The Spanish midfielder was seen turning away from Xhaka’s shot, which ended up getting deflected on Herrera’s back, and looped over David De Gea to find the back of Manchester United’s net.
United soon conceded a second goal, as their poor defending in the box led to Danny Welbeck scoring a bullet header, and it not only put the game to bed, but also ended the Old Trafford outfit’s 25-game unbeaten run in the Premier League.
However, Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville was mainly critical of Herrera, whose failure to face the shot head on led to his team conceding an unceremonious opener.
The ex-United right-back stated: “Herrera turned his back [for Xhaka’s goal] and it means there was a wicked loop on it which left De Gea with absolutely no chance. You shouldn’t turn your back. Herrera’s had a good season but he should not have done that. He’s got to stand up and take it on the chin.”
But despite Neville’s fair criticism, Jose Mourinho came to his midfield maestro’s rescue in his post-match interview.
The Portuguese claimed: “Look, Herrera has played every game and had to play today. We had to be fair with [Chris] Smalling, [Wayne] Rooney and [Michael] Carrick. Herrera did fantastically well today to play 60 minutes.
“The goal is a lucky situation. We had much better opportunities to score, we couldn’t but the game was under control.”
