Manchester United and Manchester City are reportedly set to go head-to-head to sign Bernardo Silva.

The 22-year-old has been in incredible form for Monaco this season, with close followers of the club claiming that he has been their best player this season – despite the emergence of 18-year-old Kylian Mbappe and the resurrection of captain Radamel Falcao.

His incredibly rapid progress has not escaped the attention of the football world, with several elite clubs tracking the young Portuguese talent. La Liga giants Real Madrid were said to be keen admirers of Silva, but according to reports, they have now pulled out of the race to sign him.

According to Le10 Sport, that leaves just two major clubs in contention for his signature, with other interested parties set to withdraw from the bidding war due to Monaco’s huge asking price. Those two clubs are none other than cross-town rivals Manchester United and Manchester City.

Jose Mourinho is a known admirer of Silva, and recent reports suggested that the Portuguese boss was interested in playing his fellow countryman in a wide role at Old Trafford next season. Mourinho admires players who have a good work rate and are willing to track back when off the ball, and Silva certainly fits that bill.

He is well known for his creativity, and Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City had to find that out the hard way, having been given a full display of his talent when the two clubs faced Monaco in the Champions League this season.

His performance against City caught the eye of manager Pep Guardiola, who is set to battle against his old rival Mourinho for the playmaker’s signature.

Silva has also been compared on several occasions to his namesake David Silva, who plays for Guardiola’s City, and the prospect of the pair lining up together would surely strike fear into the hearts of opposing defenders.

Silva has made a staggering 54 appearances for Monaco so far this season, scoring 10 goals as well as assisting 12.
