Barcelona have suffered a huge blow, as their primary transfer target, Marco Verratti, has agreed to join Real Madrid, as per Diario Gol.

Marco Verratti has been looked upon as the heir to the great Xavi at Barcelona, but it looks like the Catalans will have to scout some other midfield options to fill the void, as Diario Gol have revealed that Real Madrid have beaten their bitter rivals in securing the signature of the highly rated Paris Saint-Germain midfielder.

Verratti had offers from both the Spanish giants, but he showed more belief in the project at Real Madrid than the one at Barcelona. It is believed that PSG and Real Madrid have now reached an agreement over the Italy international’s transfer, which would cost Los Blancos £70 million.

It’s a well known fact that once Real Madrid identify a target, they invariably get him to sign – and so has been the case with the Italian midfielder. Zinedine Zidane had made it clear to club president Florentino Perez that Verratti was needed to replace the ageing Luka Modric.

Real Madrid’s gain is Barcelona’s loss, as they seem to be struggling in the midfield department recently. They made a big money midfield signing in Andre Gomes last year, but the Portuguese has failed to carry the weight of massive expectations at the Camp Nou.

And now, with Verratti reportedly on the verge of joining their arch-rivals, Barcelona are in dire need of a world-class midfielder to add that missing invention and quality in their midfield.
