AC Milan have won the race to sign Atalanta midfielder Franck Kessie, according to Gianluca Di Marzio.

Kessie has been linked with a number of clubs in recent weeks, including the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, and Roma. The 20-year-old seemed destined to sign for Roma, but AC Milan now seem to have stolen a march on their Serie A rivals by wooing both Atalanta and Kessie with their project.

The Ivorian is keen on leaving Atalanta in the summer, having had an excellent breakthrough season with the club this year. The midfielder has racked up six goals while assisting four others in the 28 games he has played in the Italian Serie A – a superb total for a first full season at the highest level of the game.

Kessie’s incredibly rapid progress alerted several top clubs around Europe, with scouts of numerous clubs being present at games this season in order to keep an eye on him.

However, according to Di Marzio, the youngster has now chosen to move to the San Siro with AC Milan.

In a statement posted on his website, the reputed Sky Sports journalist stated the details of the transfer, claiming that while Roma offered the same sum of money – €28 million – AC Milan’s package was more favourable both for Atalanta and Kessie, who was also offered a lower salary by Roma as opposed to the amount Milan were willing to pay him over 5 years.

The statement, posted on gianlucadimarzio.com, read: “Kessie has chosen Milan, and both clubs have reached an agreement. Atalanta will receive 28 million euros (including bonuses); Kessie himself will receive 2.5 million for 5 years.

“Therefore, Milan has beaten Roma in the race to sign the player even though Roma offered the same price (although Roma’s payment plan was less favorable to Atalanta). They also only offered a 2 million yearly salary to the Ivorian midfielder.”
