Gianluca Di Marzio: Manchester United Inching Closer To Signing Fabinho

According to Italian Journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Manchester United are very close to signing Monaco’s star midfielder Fabinho in a deal worth €50m.

The Brazilian enjoyed a loan spell under Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid before joining Monaco in a permanent deal worth £5.1m in 2015.

Since joining the French club, he has progressed by leaps and bounds, and in the 2016-17 season, though Kylian Mbappe’s goals dominated the headlines, Fabinho’s contribution from the heart of midfield was crucial for the Ligue 1 side’s recent success.

He played 53 games for Monaco in all competitions last season, scoring 10 goals and registering 4 assists. After enjoying a stellar campaign, he has been linked with Manchester United for many months, with Jose Mourinho desperate to make reinforcements in midfield ahead of next season.

Despite the speculation also suggesting that United’s top priority will be either Eric Dier or Nemanja Matic, Di Marzio claims that Fabinho’s versatility to play as a full-back in addition to a midfielder has impressed Jose Mourinho, and the Red Devils are inching closer to completing a deal worth €50m.

When asked about United’s interest, Fabinho said: “If Mourinho invites me (to join United) it would be very tempting, but, first of all, I would have to talk with my agent and with Monaco to make the things right. But Manchester United is a great team and I would think about it, for sure.”

Manchester City have also linked with the midfielder recently, but United’s chief executive Ed Woodward will try to wrap up the deal as quickly as possible in order to avoid losing out to any rivals.

Fabinho could be a long term replacement to Michael Carrick, and the final solution to United’s midfield puzzle.

The Premier League giants have already nabbed Victor Lindelof from Benfica, so Fabinho will become the second summer addition to Mourinho’s squad if the deal is successfully completed.
