Premier League giants Manchester United are keeping a close watch on Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic, and are expected to submit an official bid for the player soon.

According reports from Diario Madridista earlier today, Jose Mourinho has asked the club to make an offer for the Croatian. The midfielder has a long contract running at the Bernabeu, which would only run out in 2021.

United though, have agreed to Mourinho’s request, and are willing to put a much better offer on the table for him. The deal is expected to double the salary currently paid by the Madrid club among other contractual clauses.

Since joining Los Blancos two seasons ago in 2015 from Serie A giants Inter Milan, he has not received the chances he would have expected.

The youngster was always known for his short bursts of brilliance and sheer talent, ever since Inter grasped him from Dinamo Zagreb in 2013. He quickly grew on to enthrall fans, and despite often finding himself in uninspired moments, his sheer talent was enough for the fans to keep going.

Real Madrid took a chance and brought him to the club in 2015. At just 23 years of age, he still hasn’t managed to crack Zinedine Zidane’s first team squad for Real Madrid, and an extended period on the sidelines would only hurt his future and his career – both local and international.

With a selection of players already available in the midfield for the Red Devils, Kovacic may fit in as an immediate replacement midfielder for Manchester United. As a player who can play anywhere in the middle-third, his versatility could be well used by Mourinho, who is willing to pimp us his team after the injury fiasco led the squad depth grasping.

But the deal is highly unlikely to happen, due to the long duration left in the contract. Moreover, Zidane’s appreciation for the player’s quality might lead to the French boss using the player more regularly for the European Champions.

Apart from that, the asking price would be set incredibly high by Real Madrid, which would push Manchester United away. In fact, only last month, the player’s agent, Nikky Vuksan, denied all the rumours linking his client with a move away from the Bernabeu.

“Mateo has a very long contract with Real Madrid, until 2021,” Vuksan stated.

“Therefore I do not understand all of these rumours, all of this speculation about his future. Kovacic plays for a great club like Real Madrid and is very happy. Each day I listen and read news stories that explain a possible exit, but it is not true, at all.

“He has an optimal relationship with his team-mates and with the coach, therefore I reiterate it clearly. Kovacic will not leave Real Madrid, he will stay, (I can) safely (say that). All the rest is not true.”
