Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is looking at Leicester City’s Danny Drinkwater as a potential candidate to replace Nemanja Matic, according to Sky Sports.

After selling Matic to Man Utd, Chelsea are hunting for another midfielder to strengthen their midfield options. Having signed Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco, Conte still feels that there is a place for one more midfielder in his squad for the upcoming season.

The Italian coach was keen on Bayern’s Renato Sanches, but the tough competition for the services of Portuguese midfielder has forced Chelsea to consider Danny Drinkwater as an option.

The Blues will now look to sign one of the two aforementioned players before the transfer window shuts at the end of the month.

It is suspected that Chelsea’s no.1 target, Renato Sanches, might not prefer a move to London because of no guaranteed spot in the playing eleven.

With Bakayoko, Kante, and Fabregas already fighting for midfield places, it’s easy to comprehend that whoever comes in will need to be happy with a rotation role.

Sensing a rejection in the approach for Sanches, Chelsea are now looking to bring Drinkwater from Leicester City, as they believe that the midfielder will be more welcoming of a rotation role at the Stamford bridge.

One more factor that has tempted Conte to sign Drinkwater is his status of being an English player – something Chelsea need to balance with their foreign recruitment.

However, the Foxes see no benefit in selling their star midfielder, and it is being reported that the 2015/16 Premier League winners are ready to give the reigning English champions a hard time in their pursuit of the player.
