Barcelona superstar Neymar Jr. looked all set to complete his move to French giants Paris Saint-Germain, but now, the deal has hit an unexpected obstacle.

PSG’s swoop for Neymar seemingly looked all but done, as Barcelona’s official statement regarding his departure followed by Lionel Messi’s farewell message on Instagram took fans all over the world by storm.

The Brazilian was expected to complete his switch to Paris, as the Ligue 1 giants sought to pay out his massive €222 million release clause. However, the deal has now come to a conjuncture, after La Liga refused to accept the release clause for the striker.

PSG officials arrived at La Liga headquarters at the Spanish capital on Thursday morning in the hopes to finally see the transfer to completion for the 25-year-old. But much to everyone’s surprise, the League officials rejected the payment for Neymar, and followed it up with an official statement.

It read: “We can confirm that the player’s lawyers came to the La Liga offices this morning to deposit the clause and that it has been rejected. That’s all the information we are giving out at this moment.”

However, it is unlikely that the switch will be affected heavily by this, as the Parisians are “very confident” that they can complete the deal.

Unai Emery’s side are reportedly offering the Brazil international €30m-a-year after tax, through a deal that is worth €500 million, including the €222m release clause, his wages, and bonuses.

PSG are yet to make the signing official, but the announcement can be expected in the next few days, after they manage to pay the buyout clause “in its entirety,” which would make Neymar the most expensive player in football history.
