Tottenham fans could be in for an unpleasant surprise, as Bayern Munich are reportedly plotting a £50 million shock signing of Eric Dier, according to The Sun.

Bayern boss Carlo Ancelotti is in search of a new holding midfielder following the retirement of Xabi Alonso at the end of the previous campaign, and he seems particularly interested in the Tottenham man.

The 23-year-old has caught the attention of many clubs, not just due to his defensive prowess, but vastly due to his versatility, as he has been successfully deployed as a defensive midfielder, a centre-back, and a right-back.

The England international made more than 40 appearances for Spurs, scoring twice along the way, and played a very vital role in his side’s recent stability and success.

Naturally, his displays have attracted immense interests from elite clubs all over Europe, including Man Utd, and now Bayern.

Not long ago, the Red Devils looked favourites to sign the youngster, however, Ancelotti’s side could possibly hijack their plans and make a last minute swoop for him.

Meanwhile, the German side recently signed Corentin Tolisso from Lyon, but the Italian manager seeks a midfielder to be reckoned with, which certainly makes sense, as replacing Alonso is no easy job.

On the other hand, that is exactly what the former Real Madrid manager can expect from Dier, as he offers versatility and fresh mentality to the pitch.

However, the Bundesliga giants will have to face a massive competition from Jose Mourinho, who has been keen on bringing the Tottenham fan-favourite to Old Trafford.

Mauricio Pochettino would certainly be adamant on keeping the versatile youngster at White Hart Lane, especially since his side have already lost Kyle Walker to Manchester City, and have very little time left to find and sign a replacement should Dier depart. Nonetheless, a £50m offer could prove too hard to reject for the North Londoners.

Pochettino is yet to make a signing this summer, as fans grow frustrated due to lack of new faces at the club. The Argentine will certainly be hoping to add new names to his roster while managing to keep his best players, as the first kick-off of the new season approaches rapidly.
