With deadline day long gone and clubs preparing for a normal life after the international break, one top rumor of the summer has stubbornly stuck along, and now looks to linger.

For much of the transfer window, Manchester United were eager to make the signing of Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann. In the early months of the summer, the deal seemed to be on the verge of completion, before falling apart.

However, the Red Devils might now sense some hope.

Reports now suggest that Griezmann is willing to make a move away from the La Liga in the winter window. His primary reason for staying put with the Spanish side was to not leave them blank up front, owing to their transfer ban.

Reports in Diario Gol suggest that his €200 million release clause has been halved to €100 million following the conclusion of the summer window. As of such, the Red Devils may face stiff competition should they seek to secure the services of the world-class forward.

Allegedly eager to sign him are Barcelona, with Ernesto Valverde and company eager to have the Frenchman on their side should Lionel Messi feel that his current teammates aren’t adept enough.

However, it is clear that Jose Mourinho is adamant to make the signing, and might just ensure that all possibilities and options are exhausted before he gives up on the player.

Despite not being able to acquire Griezmann, United still look very comfortable up front. But if the English giants wish to set their sights on a possible treble, a player of his caliber seems like a staple choice for the Mancunian side.
