Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk has agreed personal terms with Liverpool, and could be seen joining them in January, claims Ian McGarry.

The Dutch international was close to sealing a dream move to the red side of Merseyside, but Southampton’s resolve proved to be too strong for the Reds. The wantaway Saints man was almost desperate to move to Anfield, looking for a high-profile club, and though at one point his arrival at Liverpool seemed imminent, the move did not go through, and Southampton managed to keep hold of the defender.

However, according to McGarry, the saga is yet to reach its end, as the Premier League giants have reportedly agreed personal terms with the Dutchman, and they reckon they will make another move for him during the winter transfer window.

McGarry said (via Transfer Window Podcast): “Van Dijk, compared to his fellow rebels in the Premier League Alexis Sanchez and Philippe Coutinho, has one great advantage in that he’s not going to be cup tied for European football in the January window. So, I would say of those three he’s got the best prospects of leaving and joining a club in January Liverpool was his first choice.

“I spoke to a close friend of his and Van Dijk definitely believed his deal to Liverpool was all agreed in terms of his personal terms in terms of this transfer window that’s just closed. But I go back to the original point in that Van Dijk has a good chance of moving in January where I would say Sanchez and Coutinho don’t.”

Though the 26-year-old eventually stayed at the St Mary’s, McGarry reckons there is still a chance of him making his desired move under Klopp. However, after the arrival of club’s new Chinese investors, they no longer require the money Jurgen Klopp’s side could offer for the defender, which puts their plans further down the void.
