Atletico Madrid forward Angel Correa has admitted to having considered departing from his current club ‘many times’ due to lack of first-team action.

The youngster was reportedly one of Jurgen Klopp’s main targets during the summer transfer window, along with Real Sociedad, who were reported to have been the closest to securing his signature, until he decided to reject offers and fight for a starting place under Diego Simeone.

The decision paid off, and the Argentine managed to capitalise on Antoine Griezmann’s absence by scoring twice in two starts.

And now, he has spoken about his decision with El Pais, and revealed: “Yes it’s true that I thought about it many times. I always want to play, it is the mindset you must be in as a professional and what you prepare for, so when you don’t it is difficult.

“When you don’t play for a while it changes your mentality and it is hard to get back into the mindset of preparing for games regularly. Now I am getting more opportunities to play I must take advantage of that and ensure I impress the coach.”

The talented forward has scored 18 goals in 87 appearances during an in-and-out spell under Simeone since arriving in 2014. However, with his new-found importance in the Atletico squad, Correa could still become one of the top talents in La Liga.

The 22-year-old is starting to flourish during Griezmann’s suspension, and could soon be seen appearing on the pitch even after that, thanks to his stunning displays.
