Wayne Rooney enjoyed a 13-year career at Manchester United, where he gave his all every time he got on to the pitch. Having left Old Trafford this summer, it appears that the Englishman still hasn’t stopped giving.
Having been the club’s talisman for so many years, Rooney’s career at United sort of petered out last season, as niggling injuries and a failure to prove himself worthy to be in Jose Mourinho’s best XI saw him relegated to the bench, and play a more subdued role than the untouchable spot he cherished for the previous twelve years of his record-breaking career in the red half of Manchester.
In the end, the choice was in the hands of the 32-year-old as to whether he wanted to stay and see out the remaining two years on his contract, or make an emotional return to Everton – the only other Premier League club he would ever play for, to quote his own words. He opted for the latter, and United were happy to pay him £10 million and see him off on his way back to his boyhood club.
However, it now appears that letting him go actually turned out to be a massive profit for the club. Rooney’s £300,000 a week salary plus loyalty bonuses would have added up to a massive £31 million in two years, which United have now saved since he has gone to Everton.
The deal turned out to be good for both clubs and the player himself. United’s all-time record goalscorer, with 253 goals in 559 appearances, is now back at the place where it all began for him, and he has already scored 4 goals this season.
Everton are struggling though, and he will face a different scenario this season, having to fight to keep his club away from the relegation zone rather than fighting for titles with United.
