Jose Mourinho has provided a positive update on Phil Jones’ injury situation, saying he believes the center-back should be fit for the blockbuster clash against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

The Englishman pulled up short during United’s woeful 2-1 defeat to Huddersfield last week, and the images of him punching the ground in frustration were a source of worry for fans. Jones has been one of the bright sparks so far this season, and has been superb and consistent with his performances.

The moment Jones departed, United immediately crumbled, as his replacement, Victor Lindelöf, made two dreadful mistakes in just 10 minutes, which ultimately cost his side the game.

With the Swede having struggled to adjust to life in England so far, the Red Devils feared they would be forced to line up with Lindelöf and Smalling at the back against Spurs for the crunch fixture, with both clubs being level on points on the table, but United ahead by virtue of goal difference.

However, those fears were calmed, as Jones declared himself fit. Furthermore, Eric Bailly is also scheduled to return for the game at Old Trafford.

“It was quite comfortable and no injuries,” said Mourinho. “So a good day for us. I think Jones will be [back] because, today, he was on the bench and he told me he will be ready in case I need him. So I believe he’ll be even better for Saturday. Apart from that, I have no news and no hopes [for any other players].”

Marcos Rojo is also said to be closing in on a return, having been included in the Champions League squad that traveled to Portugal to face Benfica last week. Luke Shaw finally made an appearance from the bench after 87 minutes in the Carabao Cup against Swansea, so things are starting to look up for Mourinho’s men once more.
