Mourinho Claims United Fans Are Treating One Player Unfairly

Jose Mourinho has hit out at certain sections of Manchester United’s fans at Old Trafford for not backing Romelu Lukaku enough.
After his big-money move to the club in the summer, Lukaku became an instant fan favourite, with his incredible start to the season endearing him to the Old Trafford faithful. It led the fans to come up with a special chant for the Belgian, which they were later forced to stop singing, as it was deemed racist and inappropriate.
Since then, though, he has gone off the boil a bit in front of goal, and the fans have gone quiet for their striker as a result – something Mourinho has admitted that he just does not understand.
When asked about Lukaku’s contribution, Mourinho said: “I would like the supporters to explain to me why they don’t support him so much because he gives everything and I think it is not fair when scoring the goal or not scoring the goal makes the whole difference. I don’t think it is fair at all. So I’m a bit disappointed – but not with him. With him [I am] very pleased.”

Mourinho also hit out at sections of the crowd who booed the substitution of Marcus Rashford for Anthony Martial. The Frenchman ended up scoring the winner, and it turned out to be a masterstroke from his manager. However, Mourinho was puzzled as to why the fans were booing in the first place, and questioned their loyalty towards the club.
He told Sky Sports: “I really don’t understand some reactions why. Are they [the fans] Red Devils? Sometimes I don’t know because they [strikers] work amazingly well.
“Today there were two strikers playing together against three top central defenders – the best we have in Europe – and they had to do the defensive job of pressing them when they were coming out with the ball which they do very well because they have big routines of playing with three in the back.”
