Cristiano Ronaldo Names The Three Players Real Madrid Regret Selling
Defending Spanish champions Real Madrid are having the worst start to their season so far, having dropped 10 points in the La Liga, and hanging second in Group H of the UEFA Champions League. This has come as a surprise to many, especially after winning nearly everything last season.
Madrid, who suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at the hands of newly-promoted Girona last weekend, now find themselves lingering at the third place, eight points behind league leaders Barcelona. Real also suffered a 3-1 hammering against Tottenham last Wednesday to further worsen their campaign.
One of the main reasons for this dismal show is the lack of form of key players, including four-time Ballon D’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo. The 32-year-old has not been at his free-scoring best so far this season, having only notched one goal so far in La Liga, and even in the Champions League, his performance has been below par.
The Portuguese, in a recent interview, referred to the departures of country-mate Pepe, James Rodriguez and Alvaro Morata in the summer, and spoke about the weakening effects they had on the Real Madrid squad.
He told BeIN Sports: “All the players who left this summer made us stronger. It’s no excuse, but players like Pepe, James (Rodriguez), (Alvaro) Morata made us stronger.
“It’s bad because we lose and are used to winning. It is a streak. It’s not like we wanted, but football changes. It’s a bad patch, but we want to change and I’m sure we’re going to change. We still have a lot of time to improve and I am convinced that we are going to do it.”
