Manchester United, despite their best efforts, are in the second position in the league table, with arch-rivals Manchester City not willing to give up on points.

With the winter transfer window about to reopen next month, manager Jose Mourinho is eager to strengthen his side’s midfield area in order to keep up with the pace of Manchester City.

The midfield, in the absence of ace man Paul Pogba, cost Manchester United few points in the league with a few hopeless displays as a result of which they are eights points behind the league leaders.

Spanish International Juan Mata has had one of the brightest starts to the season. But gradually, he has seen a big dip in his form.

Mourinho is not willing to take any chances at the business end of the season, and has therefore, decided to cut him loose in a way that will benefit the Red Devils.

Reports via Daily Mail claim that United will try to secure the services of 24-year-old Inter Milan midfielder Joao Mario in January. Mourinho is willing to use Mata as a makeweight in the move to reduce the cost of the Portuguese.

The Italian club, however, is reportedly less interested in the former Chelsea star, and would instead prefer Armenian international Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

However, Mario will not be an easy target to pursue, as Ligue 1 heavyweights Paris Saint-German are also interested in the Portuguese midfielder, and they are ready to offer Javier Pastore as a makeshift to beat the Old Trafford outfit.
