The most exciting factor about transfers that go awry on the verge of completion is the potential of them coming to reality in future transfer windows. A majority of speculation leading up to the upcoming winter window consists of precisely that.
But the hopes of Manchester United fans who were eagerly awaiting the arrival of one summer target of theirs in January might be all but dashed after this latest development.
As per The Independent, sources from both Manchester United and Atletico Madrid believe that Antoine Griezmann will be signed by Barcelona in the summer.
The Catalan giants emerged as the most recent club vying for the Frenchman’s signature, and now appear to be his most likely destination.
The same source added that many of Griezmann’s teammates as well think that the summer move to Camp Nou is a highly likely one.
This will be a big blow to Jose Mourinho, who was eager to make the first move to sign his summer target, but Barca are thought to be ‘very far ahead’ in the race.
The 26-year-old nearly made the switch to Old Trafford in the summer, but Madrid’s transfer ban made him change his mind and continue on in Spain.
As a result, Los Rojiblancos tied him down with a new contract, which would ensure that his next move would considerably profit them. Now, it appears that Barcelona are more than willing to splash the requisite £100 million plus asking price that their rivals are holding out for.
The desperation at Camp Nou is an attempt to fill the gap left by Neymar due to his world record transfer move from earlier this summer. While Barcelona then went on to break a record of their own in acquiring Ousmane Dembele, the youngster’s subsequent injury has caused them worries upfront.
Two separate leagues will be eager to see where Griezmann’s next destination will be, and perhaps the upcoming window will have something to spurn this saga on even further.
