Overtake Guardiola? What Mourinho Wants United To Do Before He Signs New Contract

Jose Mourinho has been a crucial factor in United’s recent rejuvenation, as evident in their tactics and positions so far this season.
While the Special One’s team is yet to surpass City in the title race, and seems unlikely to do so, his influence at the Mancunian club is one there is no doubt about.
However, no definitive talk of a new contract has been in evidence for a while, and now, the Portuguese manager seems to have made a particular demand if the board wishes him to sign on with the club for an extended period.
According to The Sun, Mourinho will only renew his contract if Ed Woodward and company decide to change the club’s transfer policy.
Particular in his approach, the former Chelsea gaffer has demanded that the club let him spend extensively in the winter window, in a bid to outdo Pep Guardiola’s near invincible run, which was backed by a firm transfer splurge.
However, it appears that the board does not fully agree with the plan. The voice of reason appears to state that no matter the amount and talent that United are able to inject before the end of January, the gap established by City seems far too big to be overcome.
Further, it seems that the requisite huge amount will be provided only in the summer.
With names like Thomas Lemar, Fabinho, Malcolm, and Kieran Tierney believed to be populating Mourinho’s wishlist, it is easy to see why funds might be an imminent concern.
If Mourinho does sign an extension till 2021, then the source adds that his agent, Jorge Mendes, intends to negotiate a £3 million-a-year pay increase to take the overall tally to £17 million.
But for now, Mourinho wishes to have a frank sit down with the Red Devils’ management, and decide what the club’s upcoming transfer moves would be.
