Manchester United are drawing up a mega summer swoop for Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, according to reports.

Varane has been on United’s wishlist since 2011, when former manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, expressed his interest to sign the teen at the time. However, the Frenchman made a move to Real Madrid, and since then, has developed into one of the world’s elite defenders.

The Red Devils have made multiple attempts to land the Madrid starlet ever since, and according to the latest report by Mirror, Jose Mourinho has decided to launch a fresh campaign to sign Varane.

This won’t be Special One’s first endeavour, as he had previously tried to acquire the 24-year-old’s signature in 2014, during his second stint with Chelsea.

The Portuguese tactician is keen to build a formidable back-line at Old Trafford, and considering his available options, the task appears to be unfathomable.

England internationals Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, along with last summer’s acquisition, Victor Lindelof, haven’t really made a statement with their average performances for the Red Devils.

Thus, a new centre-back, who’d be expected to be paired up with Eric Bailly, has become a priority signing for the Old Trafford outfit.

It was reported that United are plotting a bid in the region of £40 million for Varane, but Los Blancos, who are claimed to be ‘willing to sell’ the France international, are looking for around £50 million.

Meanwhile, Mourinho is also closely monitoring the current situation of Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld, who is said to be stalling a contract extension, along with Barcelona’s star defender, Samuel Umtiti.

Furthermore, other than the urgent need to land a world-class defender, United are also in need to sign a top quality left-back, and thus, are keeping tabs on Valencia’s Jose Gaya and another Tottenham star, Danny Rose.
