Though Mesut Özil was the biggest name that was constantly linked with a move to Old Trafford back in January, Alexis Sanchez turned out to be the only player who made the switch.

And after the shock move was pulled off by Manchester United, their fans were hoping the German would follow, as Jose Mourinho was reportedly looking for a reunion with him.

Moreover, Özil’s position in London was rather sensitive back then, as his previous contract was set to expire in less than six months from then.

However, as the playmaker insisted many times before, he ended up staying at the Emirates. A three and a half year deal was announced a day after deadline day, making the former Real Madrid superstar one of the highest paid players in England.

Nevertheless, United fans were content with Sanchez among their ranks, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s arrival was welcomed well by the Gooners.

And now, Manchester Evening News have revealed the reason behind the Mancunian giants snubbing Mesut Ozil and signing Sanchez instead.

As per the report, United rejected the Ozil move due to Jesse Lingard’s rise in the first team. The Red Devils felt that they should stay faithful to the rising talent amongst them.

With 13 goals and 4 assists across all competitions, the Englishman is certainly in the form of his life. Lingard is easily one of the best performers for his side alongside David De Gea. The midfielder has been a special gear in United’s attack.

Meanwhile, not capitalising on signing a world-class playmaker could also turn out to be a huge mistake for Manchester United, as his commitment to Arsenal, alongside the arrival of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, has bolstered their attacking prowess.
