5 Players Manchester United Could Sell In The Summer

The title has been lost, the season is drawing to a close, and despite the heroics of the last few months, wherein foes likes Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester City were successfully vanquished, the debacle against West Brom has left fans not all too happy with the Red Devils.

Jose Mourinho faces a momentous task ahead of him, for as things stand, the FA Cup is their sole respite, and even that looks like a tall order. Hence, changes must be made, and it has been hinted at from months now that a mass reshuffling is at hand for the summer.

Here are 5 players that Manchester United could sell in the summer window:

Paul Pogba

The biggest shocker on the list, and one that would have been unthinkable two or so months ago. Unfortunately, the Frenchman that was predicted to lead the Mancunian giants for over a decade has seen some miserable performances in the past games. Open disputes and warnings have been issued by Mourinho, and his substitutions of the talent have been quite telling moves.

If United do sell him, there is absolutely no doubt that there will be takers for his signature, considering how European giants were thought to rally at the prospect of him being available back when he was excelling at Juventus. PSG have been linked with him in the past weeks, and Real Madrid too, could possibly make him their next Galactico.

Anthony Martial

The writing seems to be on the wall for Martial’s future at United, and reports of him having rejected a bumper five-year deal offered by the club speak for itself.

A talent whose potential is immense and who has already shown on numerous occasions what he can do, it is this transfer that even without any domino effect from elsewhere, seems most likely to happen, much to the dismay of his supporters.

Tottenham, PSG, possibly Arsenal, and as of recent, even Juventus have been linked as suitors for his signature. A great chance is up for grabs, and European giants are ready to battle it out. Who’d have thought the arrival of Sanchez would have led to this big of a woe?

Matteo Darmian

Here on, we go to players that were almost a given to leave once the curtain fell on the season. The 28-year-old Italian simply hasn’t kicked off that well under Mourinho, and has managed only 8 appearances this season, none of them all too noticeable by any means.

Selling him will clear up space on United’s roster, and will also be a big positive for a player who will feel that he can do much more elsewhere, and Mourinho is likely to let him go.

In fact, as early as this week, reports have emerged that the defender has given the green light to Juventus over a summer move, and a saga that simply never flourished seems all but assured to end. This is also amidst strong interest from Italian sides Inter, Roma, and Napoli too.

Luke Shaw

The player that never was meant to function at Old Trafford. The ups and downs of his saga are pitiable to see, with Mourinho initially saying he’d be at the club for several years, before the starlet went on to deliver dismal performances yet again and ensured that the Portuguese gaffer publicly humiliated him.

There is no doubt that he is a player of phenomenal ability, and the few times he has played well this season, there has also been a hint of attacking prowess to his style. But the fact that Ashley Young gets the pick over him week in and week out is quite telling.

With suitors ranging from Tottenham to Valencia, the player will be wished well in his endeavors elsewhere, and to good measure, considering how unfortunate much of his stay at United has been.

Chris Smalling/Phil Jones

Mourinho has made it clear that central midfield will be the area of prime concern for United going into the summer window. However, several reports seem to indicate that the gaffer wants to build a strong and potentially world-class defence first. De Gea’s efforts often go in vain due to the errors of the men in front of him, and summer arrival Victor Lindelof has not been up to the mark.

With the club said to be pursuing the likes of Samuel Umtiti and Toby Alderweireld, it is clear that the likes of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones will have overstayed their welcome at Old Trafford. While it is not clear which of the two will be shown the exit door, and it will be uncanny to sell both, Mourinho has reportedly submitted a short list to replace Smalling, and Jones could be very lucky to stay on beyond the summer.
