United Star Could Leave If Toby Alderweireld Arrives
Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo may be confident of his place in the Argentina line up heading to Russia for the much-awaited FIFA World Cup, but the 27-year-old is well aware that his services may be surplus to requirements at club level.
The Argentine has had to endure plenty since joining United in 2014 under Louis van Gaal, right from work visa issues to injuries and suspensions. But he has evolved as a player during that time, and has been fairly reliable under Jose Mourinho.
However, with new signings making their way into the club, Rojo has found himself largely on the periphery under Mourinho, despite signing a new deal in March 2018, which should technically keep him at the club till 2021.
In reality, however, he only made 13 appearances in a red shirt this past season, and with United reportedly in the market to sign Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld, Rojo’s days could indeed be numbered.

Mourinho has already signed young full-back Diogo Dalot from Porto in this transfer window, and is in the mood to secure the services of a few more player. This could prove to be problematic for Rojo, who is pretty much a regular at the international level.

A versatile and robust defender, Marcos Rojo can slot in comfortably at centre-back, where he has played most of the times under his Portuguese boss. But he has also been known to seamlessly transition into a very able left-back – position wherein he shows his class for Argentina.

While his United future is in serious doubt, the 2014 World Cup finalist will most definitely have his eyes fixed on going one step further with his country this time around at the World Cup finals in Russia.
Argentina play their first World Cup match against Iceland on Saturday, in a game that Rojo can be expected to start.
