VAR Controversy: What Happened In Spain And Portugal’s World Cup Matches

Spain and Portugal qualified for the knockout stage after dramatic Group B last match encounters.

Both teams ended with draws, as Iran and Morocco showed their determination to go out with their heads held high. Both games had VAR controversies as injury-time goals changed the situation and the result.

Portugal were held 1-1 by Iran, with the latter scoring a late penalty after a video review. It was the veteran Ricardo Quaresma that put Portugal in front with a sensational goal at the end of the first half.

Cristiano Ronaldo then missed a penalty and was also shown a yellow card after a lengthy VAR review for a possible red.

Karim Ansarifard equalised for Iran in the 93rd minute. The late penalty denied the European champions the top spot in the group. Portugal will now face Group A toppers Uruguay in Sochi on Saturday.

In the other game Spain drew 2-2 against Morocco to finish as toppers. The 2010 world champions were were in line for a shocking loss, but Iago Aspas’ injury-time goal saw Spain finish the game with a point.

The referee disallowed the goal initially, but post replays, it was awarded. Moroccan players were left frustrated as their protests went in vain.

Earlier, Khalid Boutaib gave Morocco a surprise 14th-minute lead, after there was a mix-up between Andres Iniesta and Sergio Ramos. Five minutes later, Iniesta made a sublime assist for Isco, who netted in a calmly manner.

The drama started in the second half, when Youssef En Nesyri gave Morocco the lead when he headed in a superb goal from Faycal Fajr’s corner. His 81st-minute header had given hopes to the side to complete a stunning win over Spain. But Aspas had other ideas.

Spain won the group on goals scored, as they extended their unbeaten run to 23 games. They will face Russia in Round of 16.
