Manchester United’s long-drawn saga for a centre-back this season has been painful to follow, to say the least.

While not one of their initial pursuits, the hunt for a leader in the heart of their defense quickly took the center stage after the arrivals of Fred and Diogo Dalot.

Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld was and remains the top contender. Several other names have been linked with the Red Devils as well, the most recent being that of Harry Maguire, whose hopes of arriving at Old Trafford were squashed by Leicester City.

However, a relatively newer name entered the fray as a result, and now stands to be the potential arrival.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Manchester United have agreed to personal terms with Barcelona defender Yerry Mina, with a 5-year-long contract reported to be on the table. The potential deal will see the 23-year-old Colombian earn £7.5million-a-year – or around £145,000-a-week before taxes.

The report adds that a sum of £40 million is Barcelona’s current valuation for the centre-back, and that both clubs are still negotiating on a final figure, with £5 million here and there reported as the end touches being discussed.

However, any deal will still await absolute confirmation that Alderweireld will not move to Old Trafford this window. This will mean that the Mancunian giants will make a great deal with the quoted amount, as the Belgian was being held back by Spurs for as high as £75m.

Further still, it is Barca that will emerge most victorious, as Mina was purchased for a relatively paltry sum of £11.5 million mere months ago.

It was his performance with his national side in the World Cup that put him on the radar and accounts for the price jump, despite his spell with the Catalan giants not providing ample minutes.

Now, the question remains whether or not this deal will be finalized quickly enough, and whether the youngster will meet Jose Mourinho’s demands.
