Ryan Giggs has urged Anthony Martial to fight for his spot at Manchester United.

Martial has been one of the biggest talking points about Manchester United this summer. In June, the forward’s agent declared that the player would be leaving Old Trafford after falling behind Alexis Sanchez in the pecking order.

A number of clubs were interested in him, but the Red Devils weren’t getting the deal they wanted, and eventually, Martial had to return for the pre-season training.

Amid United’s US Tour, the 22-year-old travelled to Paris to be with his partner, as they awaited the birth of their child. But his unwillingness to join the squad immediately angered Jose Mourinho.

The United boss confirmed that the club had slapped a £180,000 fine on the forward for returning late. Martial was also dropped to the bench in the opening game against Leicester City, as Marcus Rashford led the United attack. Things have continued to look bleak for the Frenchman at Old Trafford.

However, Manchester United veteran Ryan Giggs hopes that the closing of the transfer window across Europe could help the youngster concentrate on football, allowing him to fight for his position.

The Welshman believes that Martial has the quality to become one of the Premier League‘s finest forwards, but he needs to prove himself if he is to secure a spot in the starting XI.

“I hope Anthony Martial comes back and fights for his team and once the transfer window closes in Europe then hopefully he will be able to concentrate on his football,” Giggs stated.

“We have seen glances of his qualities, which are definitely there, but it’s up to him to prove he deserves a starting place again.”

Manchester United will be up against Brighton on Sunday, wherein Romelu Lukaku is likely to start for the Red Devils, while Rashford could be forced into a wing position.

As per reports, Alexis Sanchez hasn’t travelled with the squad, which could mean an opportunity for Anthony Martial to make his mark on the pitch. However, it will be interesting to see whether or not Mourinho actually decides to start the French International.
