Manchester United‘s lack of transfer activity, despite manager Jose Mourinho claiming there was need for change, was puzzling to the masses, and as was observed later, it was surprising to the manager himself.

Executive Vice-Chairman Ed Woodward denied shelling out the necessary cash to bring in new talent even after being heavily persuaded by Mourinho, leading to speculation of a rift between the two high ranking officials at the club.

One of the players that was linked with joining Manchester United was Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld. The Belgian was struggling to find a regular spot in the starting line-up, and was on the lookout for options elsewhere.

While it looked certain that United would try their utmost best to bring him to Old Trafford, the move fizzled out very quickly, leaving the player stranded in North London.

Similarly, his teammate at Spurs, Danny Rose, was also linked with the Red Devils at one point of time, but Ed Woodward shut the move out by claiming that Luke Shaw had the tools needed to succeed at the Theatre of Dreams.

Tottenham have since confirmed, as The Mirror are reporting, that United did not even make a single attempt to sign the duo, despite all the stories claiming there was a bid in the offing.

In fact, the North Londoners themselves made a call to find out whether there was any interest in Alderweireld or Rose. The answer was a comprehensive no – which basically ended all speculation right then and there.

Mourinho has been critical in interviews and press conferences about the manner in which his transfer requests were handled by chiefs at Old Trafford.

And now, this latest statement by Spurs does back up the Portuguese’s claims that the Mancunian side were never even close to signing Alderweireld or any other center-back for that matter.
