Manchester United Made A £222m Offer For La Liga Star This Summer
Manchester United‘s frustrating summer transfer window is no secret to football fans around the world, but it isn’t as if the Red Devils didn’t try to sign any top players at all.
Several attempts were made to prise some of Europe’s top stars and bring them to Old Trafford, but for one reason or the other, none actually bore fruit.
One such signing that was promised but wasn’t delivered was that of Real Madrid sensation Gareth Bale.
The Welsh wizard was certainly on the agenda for United this summer, and multiple reports suggested that the former Spurs man could be well and truly on his way.
However, a change in management at the Bernabeu and a promise of more playing time was enough to maintain Bale’s status as a Galactico and frustrate the Mancunians further. But Manchester United were so desperate to sign the winger, that they were even willing to cough up £222 million for his services.

Spanish outlet OK Diario are reporting that the offer was indeed made by United officials, but it wasn’t enough to lure Bale away from the Spanish capital.
There would have been incentive for Bale to move too, with an almost guaranteed pay-hike with the added benefit of playing every single week if he could stay fit.

The Welshman had expressed a desire to play regular football week in and week out in an interview following his heroic performance off the bench in the Champions League final, but later suggested that a new manager could mean a new lease of life for him in Madrid.
If the move had materialised, it would have been a club-record sale for Real Madrid, and would have been well over the amount they paid to buy him from Tottenham Hotspur in the first place.
As it stands, however, the player remains with the reigning European champions.
