How Rio Ferdinand Reacted To David De Gea’s Late Save Against Watford

Jose Mourinho will be breathing easy following Manchester United‘s 2-1 win over Watford at Vicarage Road.

First-half goals from Romelu Lukaku and Chris Smalling paved the way for a Red Devils’ victory, despite Andre Gray’s unsuccessful attempt to salvage something in the second half with his goal.

Watford’s closest moment at protecting their perfect league start came in the final seconds of the game. A strong opportunity had opened up in a promising spot after Nemanja Matic had given away a kick and also gotten himself sent off after picking up a second yellow card.

However, when Christian Kabasele’s near-perfect header seemed destined to give the Hornets a point to treasure, David De Gea did what he does best and saved his side two valuable points.

Here’s how former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, who is now a pundit at BT Sport, reacted to the save: “David de Gea look at this save here, everything about him, I love him. He puts points on the board more than anyone on this planet. He’s the best.”

His words have great merit to them, as on countless occasions in the past, De Gea has single-handedly kept United afloat in their games and rescued points.

In fact, such was the Spaniard’s brilliance on Sunday that Watford keeper Ben Foster had this to say about him: “Fair play to the goalie, producing some world-class saves. De Gea is top class. Any young goalkeeper out there just watch him, you’ll learn a lot.”

This will be a great relief for De Gea himself, as he had come under a lot of criticism after the World Cup this summer, wherein his otherwise impressive showing was absent and his abilities were placed under great doubt.

But after antics like the ones on Sunday, many of those doubts will have been lifted, and he has certainly retained his spot as one of the finest shot-stoppers in the world, if not the finest.
