How Sir Alex Ferguson Reacted To Wayne Rooney’s Transfer Request

When you think of Manchester United and their terrific times, two names generally pop up in your head before others. Such were the contributions of Sir Alex Ferguson and Wayne Rooney in making the club the rulers of the sport for such a long while.
The duo did wonders in their time together, but things were not always smooth sailing in their player-manager relationship.
Rooney was rumoured to be unhappy multiple times during his United career, and was always seen as the man about to leave Old Trafford.
This did come close to being reality in 2010, when Wayne Rooney put in a transfer request. The news shocked one and all, with rivals Man City being assumed as his preferred destination, but it had the most devastating impact on Sir Alex Ferguson.

During a press conference that had him talking about the same, he said: “I’m disappointed, very disappointed, I can’t believe it.
“He had told us he was happy at the club, that he was at the best club in the world, so I must say it was terribly disappointing to get the news because I can’t quite understand it.”

The boss was very descriptive about his disappointment in the striker’s strange request, and among the many things he ranted about, the Scot said: “Since the minute he’s come to the club, we’ve always been a harbour for him.
“Any time he has been in trouble, the advice we have given him, we have done nothing but help him. I was even prepared to give him financial advice, many times. I don’t know how many times we have helped him in terms of his private life and other matters.”
The Englishman of course did not leave until 2017, but it was a small dent in a glorious career at the club where he left as a captain and legend, bagging the most goals in Manchester United‘s history.
